Night Guards

Are you clenching or grinding your teeth at night? Are you experiencing jaw teeth pain or TMJ problems? Are your teeth chipped, cracked and sensitive? These may all be signs that you need a night guard.

Night guards are necessary if you are grinding or clenching your teeth. Most patients are not aware of this habit because it usually occurs when they sleep. The evidence is usually seen when your dentist notices significant loss of tooth structure such as chipped enamel, fractured/ cracked teeth. The loss of tooth structure may cause your teeth to be sensitive to hot/ cold and pain when you chew. Furthermore, clenching or grinding could result in a flat, unappealing smile line.

A night guard is a custom made appliance that is designed just for you. With a night guard, your teeth are protected from damage caused by clenching and grinding your teeth. A night guard can help alleviate/ prevent TMJ problems from developing.

In order to fabricate your night guard, an impression or a digital scan is taken of your mouth. The impression or digital scan is taken to the lab. The lab will fabricate your night guard, send it to our office and you will be scheduled to get them fitted. The night guard will usually cover the entire top row of teeth. In some cases, partial coverage of the arch may be recommended. If requested, it is possible to have a night guard made for the lower arch.

It is recommended that you use your night guard every night. Inconsistent use of your night guard may result in your symptoms not improving or damage to continue to occur to your enamel.

If your night guard does not fit or is uncomfortable, let your dentist know immediately.
